Wooden Wick Candles: What Makes Them Different?
Wooden Wick Candles: What Makes Them Different?
There’s something undeniably cozy about lighting a candle and hearing the soft crackle of a wooden wick. But wooden wicks aren’t just about the sound—they create a different candle-burning experience compared with traditional cotton wicks.
At Modern Martha, our hand-poured coconut soy candles feature crackling wooden wicks to bring together beautiful fragrance, ambiance, and that extra touch of cozy. So, what exactly makes wooden wick candles different?
What Is a Wooden Wick?
A wooden wick is a thin piece of wood specifically designed to draw melted wax upward and fuel the candle flame. Instead of the braided fibers commonly found in cotton wicks, wooden wicks offer a distinctive look and a gentle crackling sound as they burn.
That subtle crackle is one of the reasons wooden wick candles have become so popular—it adds another layer to the candle experience beyond fragrance alone.
Why Do Wooden Wick Candles Crackle?
The signature crackle comes from the wood itself as the candle burns. Tiny amounts of moisture and natural variations within the wood can create those soft popping and crackling sounds.
Think of it as a miniature fireplace effect. Pair that sound with your favorite fragrance, and lighting a candle can instantly make a room feel warmer and more inviting.
Wooden Wicks vs. Cotton Wicks
Both wooden and cotton wicks can make wonderful candles, but the experience is a little different.
The Sound
Cotton wicks typically burn quietly, while wooden wicks can produce a soft, soothing crackle. If ambiance is part of what you love about burning candles, that little bit of sound can make a surprisingly big difference.
The Look
Wooden wicks also have a distinctive appearance. Their flat, natural design pairs beautifully with modern candle vessels and creates a simple, elevated look even when the candle isn't burning.
The Burn
Wooden wicks can create a beautiful, even melt pool when properly paired with the candle's wax, fragrance and vessel. Because every candle formula is different, the wick must be carefully selected and tested to achieve the right burn.
How to Get the Best Burn From a Wooden Wick Candle
Wooden wicks sometimes need a little more care than traditional cotton wicks, but a few simple habits can make a big difference.
Before each burn, remove the charred portion of the wooden wick and keep the wick trimmed to approximately 1/8 inch. A wick that's too long may produce a flame that's larger than necessary, while a wick that's too short can have difficulty staying lit.
For the first burn, allow enough time for the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the vessel. This helps establish an even melt pool and encourages a more consistent burn throughout the life of your candle.
And, as with any candle, never leave it burning unattended.
